The main causes of cellulite are a great debate ... research has not been conclusive and there are many different theories about cellulite, what causes it and how to treat it.

Cellulite has got to be one of the most frustrating problems facing women today. Cellulite is that unsightly orange-peel fat that attacks not only over-weight women, but slim women as well. Some men also have problems with cellulite, but overall it seems to be a woman’s problem.

What exactly is cellulite? Research doesn’t seem to be conclusive, but the general consensus seems to be that cellulite is a form of fat that traps fluid and possibly toxins within the fat cell. Combine this with inflexible connective tissue called septae (which connect the skin to underlying layers of tissue), and the result is the "orange-peel" look that we have come to think of cellulite as. (A simple explanation is to compare it to a quilt or mattress where thread or string pulling down on the material cause "tufts".  When the connective tissue called septae connects the skin to underlying layers of tissue, fat pushes up in between the connective tissue causing the "tuft" or bumpy "orange-peel" look.) On-going research still hasn’t found a cure for cellulite, despite the plethora of cellulite creams, pills and potions on the market all claiming to be the magic formula to eradicate cellulite.

Most common causes of cellulite:

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Hereditary

Other less common causes of cellulite:

  • Wearing high heels

  • Excessive alcohol intake

  • Stress

  • Drugs and medications like diet pills, diuretics, sleeping pills and even oral contraceptives (which cause Estrogen Dominance and triggers an increase in fat and water retention)
