Cinnamon ... Diabetes Natural Cure?
Many people are very surprised to hear that cinnamon has such a positive effect on blood sugar levels, as well as being a powerful anti-inflammatory. After all, it's just a spice! But contrary to popular belief, spices are much more powerful than people give them credit for.
Another very powerful spice is turmeric and like cinnamon, it too regulates blood sugar levels and is also another very powerful anti-inflammatory. As a matter of fact, turmeric is such an important anti-inflammatory substance that you can now find it in supplement form.
The proof is in the pudding ... (or poultice)!
I actually had a first hand experience that confirmed for me how powerful food, herbs and spices can actually be. A while ago, I tripped and fell on my knees on my tiled floor, landing very heavily on my left knee. I was just getting ready to go to my in-laws for supper and didn't want to hold up supper, so I went without applying any ice or anything to my knee.
As the evening progressed, my knee was becoming progressively more stiff and painful and when it came time to leave, I couldn't hide my limp as I got up. My mother-in-law saw my limp and asked me what happened and when I told her, she immediately went to the kitchen and mixed up a paste (or poultice) made up on a few tablespoons of flour, a couple of tablespoons of turmeric and an egg yolk to hold it together.
She told me to go home, apply the poultice, wrap it up with plastic wrap so my sheets didn't get messy and she said the pain and stiffness would be gone in the morning.
I had never heard of this before and I was a bit sceptical, but I figured there would be no harm in trying it, so I went home and followed her directions.
The next morning when I got up, I was totally amazed that the swelling was almost all gone and the pain and stiffness were 100% gone!
It is true that my knee was still bruised, but not as badly as the night before and I do believe that the bruising healed much quicker than it would have if I had not applied the poultice.
For me, this was proof positive of how powerful food, herbs and spices are and how they can be used to heal.
After my experience with the turmeric, that started me thinking about my diabetes and how spices like turmeric and cinnamon could be used to reduce my inflammation and help me to get control of my blood sugar levels.
I did some research and found a number of foods that are known to reduce inflammation and many of these foods have been included in the Fatty Liver Detox Program...
Amongst those anti-inflammatory foods were also ginger and green tea, so I decided to try a herbal tea mixture of green tea, freshly grated ginger, cinnamon and a bit of turmeric. I would drink this tea every day and I did find that my inflammation and blood sugar levels were reduced.
Unfortunately, after a while I found out that ginger was on my list of food intolerances, so I stopped adding the ginger to the tea, but I still continued to drink the green tea with cinnamon and turmeric.
I also added fish oil supplements, ground up flaxseeds and lots of high omega-3 fish like salmon and sardines to my diet to help with the inflammation and blood sugar control (as well as many of the anti-inflammatory foods on the list in the link above).
Let's face it, it is so much more pleasant to get healthy benefits from food instead of supplements or medications, and I love the taste of cinnamon! Diabetes has not been a pleasant experience for me obviously, but I am happy that so far I've been able to control the diabetes with diet alone and no medications or insulin by following the "Fatty Liver Detox Diet"...
