During that time I restricted carbohydrate intake from as low as 20 grams of carbohydrate to as high as 50 grams (this is VERY low carbohydrate intake!). During that time I tried to keep my exercising to just a 20 minute walk every other day. Now this is not very much exercise at all, yet I very quickly found that I couldn't walk 20 minutes without getting low blood sugar / hypoglycemia symptoms of shakiness, rubbery legs, inner trembling, heart palpitations, headaches and just overall weakness. I felt similar to how I usually feel after a bad bout of the flu!

The reason for this is that on these old-fashioned diabetic diets, the body very quickly uses up its store of glycogen which is usually reserved for periods of time when carbohydrate intake is lower or to use during exercise. Because there is no reserve of glycogen, the body does not have enough glucose on hand to use during exercise, which means it has to start breaking down muscle tissue, which slows down your metabolism.

Why do these diabetic diets trigger food cravings?

The brain and nervous system MUST have enough glucose on hand at all times to perform its essential functions. Without sufficient glucose to serve the needs of the brain and nervous system, a person will die. This is why our bodies' have its built-in survival mechanism to prevent this: first, it triggers intense food cravings to try to entice you to eat the carbohydrates the body needs; secondly, it will break down muscle tissue into glucose. What many people do not realise is that it is physically impossible for the body to break down FAT into glucose ... that is why it must cannibalize muscle tissue!

That is one of the worst side effects of following these unhealthy diabetic diets: the body has to break down muscle tissue to meet the body's needs for glucose. The more muscle tissue that is broken down, the slower your metabolism and the less calories you need to meet your daily energy requirements.
