Last year I wrote an article on the difference between fasting and detox programs, and there seems to be so much interest in detox programs, especially detox liver programs, that I decided to not only revisit this topic, but to write an entire NEW 7 Day "Miracle Food" Detox Liver Program...

There is a big difference between just fasting for a few days and following a program that is designed to support your liver and detoxification system, namely your lungs, lymphatic system, bowels, kidneys and even your skin, as well as provide you with an impressive amount of healthy vitamins, minerals and nutrients.  This detox program is not focused on restricting your caloric intake, but rather is focused on providing you with the best nutritional support for your liver and detoxification system.

If you just fast by just drinking water or juice, or eating too few calories or removing an entire food group from your diet, you are not providing your body with the nutritional support it requires and your body will retaliate by greatly slowing down your metabolism and triggering intense food cravings. 

It is very different when you follow a healthy detox liver program.  The focus of a detox program is not to fast per se, but to cleanse and detoxify your body of the many toxins that are retained in your tissues.  Often years of unhealthy eating and living will cause your detoxification system, especially your liver, to become very sluggish and have trouble detoxifying your body of all the toxins it is bombarded with everyday.  When this happens you will often find that you will start to retain fluid and be quite bloated.  When you retain fluid like this, you often will retain these toxins with the fluid in your tissues. 

You will also find that you will very easily gain weight and fat, especially around the abdomen (or pot belly or beer belly as it is commonly known as).  This is because the abdomen is the preferred spot for the liver to deposit excess fat that it cannot metabolise and burn off or excrete through daily bowel movements.

As a matter of fact, our unhealthy lifestyle is often very low in fibre and this is a direct cause of depositing fat in our abdomen, because if we had sufficient fibre in our diet, much of this fat would be excreted through our bowel movements, along with excess toxins, cholesterol and estrogen.

This causes your body to slow down its metabolism and this in turn makes it very easy to gain weight and very hard to lose weight.  As time goes on it becomes harder and harder until it can seem virtually impossible to lose weight even though you may be following a very low calorie diet or doing a lot of exercise.

Put in its simplest context ... clean up your liver with this "detox liver" program and watch the pounds start to melt away!

Just before I followed this detox liver program, I was feeling so amazingly bloated, especially my ankles, calves and abdomen.  (I was so bloated that my calves felt like balloons ... my skin felt so tight and painfully stretched.)  Within 48 hours of following the detox liver program, I noticed that the swelling in my legs had reduced (I lost 1 inch off my ankles and a 1/2 inch off my calf!)  I also noticed that my watch, which was always tight, was very loose. 

Within 1 week of following the "Detox Liver" Program I had the following results*:

  • Lost 1 inch off my bust

  • Lost 1 1/2 inches off my abdomen

  • Lost 1/2 inch off my hips, thighs and calves

  • Lost 1 1/2 inches off my ankles

  • Lost 1/2 inch off my wrist

  • Lost 5 1/2 pounds (2.5 kilos)

And as if the above results were not impressive enough, I also noticed a vast decrease in these symptoms that had been plaguing me for quite a while...

  • Big increase in my energy levels

  • Improved concentration and memory and clear-headedness

  • Food cravings and hunger disappeared.  I was very surprised at how long I could go between meals and snacks without feeling any hunger at all!

  • Dry itchy eyes and dry skin reduced

  • Blood sugar stabilised

  • Huge improvement of a Candida spit-test I did, which indicated that as a side-benefit the detox was also helping to eradicate my Candida

  • I was sleeping deeper and reduced my frequency of night-time trips to the bathroom in half!

  • But probably my biggest surprise came from a significant decrease in plantar fasciitis pain I had been experiencing for the previous 3 years.  I think this was related to the large decrease in fluid retention in my ankles and calves. 

*Remember that everybody is different and your results will undoubtedly be different than mine, depending on what your current weight and level of health is.  Also, a lot of my loss was fluid loss because I was very bloated and had a lot of fluid to lose.  If you are not very bloated or have much fluid retention, you obviously will not have these kinds of results so quickly.

I know that most of the weight loss was water loss, but given how bloated I was, that made me very happy.  I felt like for the first time in years my lymphatic system and all the other detoxification systems (especially my liver) had been working properly to eliminate all the built up toxins in my tissues.  And of course, improving my liver function made losing weight and fat so much easier than previously ... and all without food cravings or hunger!

So besides losing weight, what kind of health benefits can you expect to have when you follow this healthy Detox Liver Program?

The thing that many people tend to forget about is that weight gain is just one small part of the problem caused by unhealthy lifestyles.  When your detoxification systems are not working properly you will have many annoying symptoms such as...

"Miracle Food":  Ginger

Everyday we hear about "new" research studies proving the "miraculous" healing powers of many different foods.  Most of these foods are really just normal everyday foods that everybody used to eat as part of a normal diet.  Of course, in the last 50 to 80 years highly processed convenience foods have taken the place of these healthy whole foods to the detriment of our health.

More and more people are replacing healthy, nutritious whole foods with nutritionally empty processed foods full of chemicals, preservatives and additives.  Food forms the building blocks of every cell and tissue in our body.  If the food we eat is nutritionally deficient, it obviously is not going to do a very good job of rejuvenating our health and preventing the development of disease.

If, on the other hand, we go back to basics and eat healthy, nutritious food, our bodies have the chance to use the vitamins and minerals in these foods to improve all areas of our health. 

Now here is a food that the Asian people have considered a "superfood" for centuries, but that we westerners have overlooked.  And what food is that?  Ginger, of course! ...

For thousands of years, Chinese Medicine has used ginger to treat many ailments.  Some of the health benefits of ginger have been proven in medical studies, other benefits have a more anecdotal history, but are just as viable.  So what health benefits can you expect to get from ginger?  This is just a short list...

  • The most common use for ginger is digestive.  It has been known to help with nausea and motion sickness, vomiting, appetite loss, indigestion, heartburn, gas, bloating and diarrhea.  (One theory is that it can help with heartburn because it can help to improve the muscle tone in the digestive tract, including the esophageal sphincter.  Reflux occurs when this sphincter becomes loose and allows digestive juices to back into the esophagus.)

  • Ayurvedic medicine also uses ginger to help with arthritis and rheumatism and joint problems.

  • Ginger is known to have anti-viral and anti-biotic properties that is thought to help with symptoms of colds and flus, like aches and pains (including headaches) caused by fever.  It is best if you start taking ginger in the early stages of the cold or flu.  It can also help to loosen phlegm and to ease sore throats.

  • It supports the immune system and improves immune system function

  • It improves circulation and has been known to help to alleviate muscle cramps (including menstrual cramps). 

  • It is an anti-inflammatory so it can be very helpful with muscle pain, especially conditions like plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and knee pain.  It is important to take it regularly, not just once in a while.

  • Ginger is also known to have a positive effect on Candida Albicans and is commonly used for its anti-fungal properties.

  • Ginger promotes circulation and decreases sticky platelets, improving cardiovascular health.

  • A recent study shows that ginger extracts helps to prevent gastric ulcers.

  • Ginger is known to increase digestive fluids, as well as neutralize stomach acids.  It has also been used to treat peptic ulcers and can help to reduce swelling and bleeding of gastric ulcers.

  • There have been preliminary studies done to research the possibility that ginger can aid in losing weight by increasing the body's capacity to burn calories.

  • Studies have shown a strong possibility that ginger may help to reduce the risk of certain cancers.

  • Ginger also improves good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol

Now, the best thing about using Superfoods to improve your health is that you can eat these foods in delicious dishes instead of having to pop a pill!  And there are many, many delicious dishes that use ginger.  Asian dishes in particular use lots of ginger in stirfries and other dishes (see below for one of my favourite stirfry recipes).  But if you want to have a good amount of fresh ginger each day, you can also consider adding ginger to smoothies or fresh juice or just making a ginger tea by grating ginger in boiling water. 

Recipe of the month:   Ginger Prawn & Tofu Stir-fry

100 gr. prawns                        100 gr. cubed tofu

1/4 cup chicken stock               Dash Soy, Teriyaki or Black bean sauce

Chopped vegetables (broccoli, green beans, carrot, mushrooms, onion or your favourites)

Chopped ginger to taste            Chopped garlic to taste

Salt and pepper, to taste           Cooked rice vermicelli noodles (or your favourite)


  1. Heat large frypan or wok
  2. Add prawns and a bit of olive oil or chicken stock and quickly saute.  Set aside.
  3. Stir-fry vegetables, ginger and garlic in chicken stock and soy, teriyaki or black bean sauce until just tender.
  4. Add back prawns, tofu and vermicelli noodles and toss until heated through
  5. Serves 4
